Many members of the
Auxiliary and National Fire Services were veterans of the First World
War
and as such were at an age at the outbreak of
the Second World War which made them too old for military service. These men were often
already serving in fire services or were given
roles within the 'Civil Defence' services instead. As a result it was
not uncommon to see fire service personnel wearing service ribbons on their
tunics. (see picture left)
